The History of Love
Overall, I liked this novel. I would not put it on my favorites list, nor would I strongly recommend it to anyone, but it was a nice set of interwoven stories and worth a read if you haven't anything else waiting on your nightstand. I think the publisher's description "hauntingly beautiful" is stretching it a bit. I would recommend her husband's (jonathan safran foer) stories if you are looking for more 3 dimensional, interesting characters and similar (but more skilled) writing style.
So Many Books, So Little Time: A Year of Passionate Reading
I'm such a bookaholic that I will read just about any book ABOUT books, too. (Basbane's tales of book-love are some of my favorites.)This diary of a year's worth of reading by Sara Nelson came to me at just the right moment. I was between books with nothing to read, lost and lonely wandering through the aisles of bookstores when I happened upon it, started reading, started relating, and bought it. It was the perfect "between novels" book for me. I don't have the same taste in books but I felt that I could have written much of it myself with some title substitutions. She writes in a casual, relatable style and shares the same addiction to which many of us here at goodreads are susceptible. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would love to do a similar experiment for myself one year...maybe next year?

This one rolls in at #99 on the Best 100 list...and I loved every last sentence of it.
The Magnificent Ambersons
I read this in January of 2000, when I started my quest to read the Modern Library's list of the "Best 100 Novels of the 20th Century" to form my own opinion. This was an excellent start to the list, and I really enjoyed the characters and (spoiler alert) comeuppances.

This is the book that inspired my career choice, and later influenced my specialization as a play therapist/social worker, along with "Play Therapy" by Garry Landreth.This is a beautiful story of a child who needed unconditional positive regard and a non-judgmental environment where he was allowed to call the shots in order to heal.Read this, and you'll know exactly what it's like to be one of my child clients in a play therapy session.
